Opem Letter to ACLU You may not agree your organization is for censorship, but the facts now speak otherwise. The continued targeting of "religious" speech, conducted by students, has now become the new legacy of the ACLU. Valedictorians are allowed the privilege to speak. So what they say must now be censored. I do not care if it is a muslim, christian, jew, wiccan, scientologist, or other person of faith - including a satanist - represented by this very student. To shamelessly remove religious identity, in what is spoken, simply because it is sponsored by a government sanctioned body, is censorship that is a direct attack on the core values of many people, however much they may disagree with each other. It is true, that in the past, the ACLU did support free speech. However, it is now apparent that the ends justifies the means in regard to "religious freedom" in the case of the "New ACLU". An ACLU devoid of the values of its past, an ACLU that now stands for censorship and tyranny over free speech. An ACLU that has betrayed itself. It may be the case that even the courts have now sided with your censorship. This should not be found surprising, since the very organization that now claims to protect free speech actually now stands in opposition to this very freedom. The ACLU of today represents a sad turning point from its past, a past noted for the protection of freedom of speech; but that is now but a shadow of the former idealism, passion, and fire for freedom - religious or otherwise - it once represented. It is time for everyone at the ACLU to reflect on the idealism of its past, and reclaim the past liberal values - and legacy - the ACLU once stood for. It is sad indeed, that an organization that once sought freedom for every citizen, now stands against some citizens - namely every citizen of faith- in its pursuit of freedom and has virtually destroyed any claim to a past legacy that promoted this very freedom. An organization that now merely believes it is doing so while betraying these very self same values. An organization that was founded, fundamentally, to stand against Fascism that now embraces the very roots of Fascism. Will it be spoken by future generations that the ACLU was a bastion of liberty. Currently the sad answer is yes it will be spoken that the ACLU once, in the now distant past, had a legacy of promoting freedom. It is indeed, an ironic and sad legacy. A legacy of self-betrayal.Hopefully freedom will once again be embraced, even by the ACLU. Sincerely, Michael Baun
