"Let's Chat" Says Clinton With Exquisitely Poor Timing
Attempting to wrest the spotlight from the MSM catnip that is Barack Obama, Hillary is quickly following up her Big Announcement with the first of her "chats" or "conversations" or "gabfests" or whatever she's most recently labeled her 3-part series of web conferences, during which, safely ensconced behind the curtain of the etherweb, her team (or perhaps just a bit of code) will screen thousands upon thousands of web-submitted questions for the ones that precisely match the content and wording of the target questions she's already determined she wants asked. But given the way this week is shaking out, we can't be blamed for questioning the timing.
That's not to say that she has an ulterior motive (well, other than shoving Barry out of the news cycle and poisoning the well before the State of the Union), but more importantly, I think she may find that her meticulously scripted, yet desperately trying to appear impromptu online jam session may find itself somewhat drowned out.
In the two days since Hillary announced:
Two additional candidates have gotten into the race. Intruiging things appear to be breaking loose in both Iran and North Korea. There's evidence out today that a 9/11-style attack on US soil by al Qaeda in Iraq was recently prevented. All political eyes are beginning to divert toward the current White House occupant, as tomorrow's State of the Union nears. And tonight is one of the most enticing TV nights in months, with new episodes of both "24" and "Heroes" (a situation which yields the aforementioned dilemma, especially for those with single-tuner DVRs).
Clinton's cyber-love-in is at least well-timed enough as not to conflict with either show, but then again, 7 pm is a bit of a tricky time. Few people are left at work, but many commuters won't be home yet. Those who are home are probably eating dinner (or have yet to eat dinner, in which case they'll be loathe to trounce their appetites with 30 minutes of nauseatingly simulated warmth, mealymouthed fauxcentrism, and perhaps the occasional impassioned screech).
The details, in case you're at the infosphere at 7:00 and want to prove just how strong your stomach is, are available in the extended entry.
Final thought, just by the by: Did someone on her team convince her that "I'm in, and I'm in to win," is somehow catchy or compelling or anything north of simplistic, yet awkward? It seems to accompany her every communication now (as you'll see below).
Dear Flip,
Tonight, let the conversation begin. It's live and online at 7 p.m. EST:
http://www.hillaryclinton.com
Join me for the first in a series of conversations on the future of our country and the important issues like the Iraq war, health care, and energy independence. I'll answer your questions three nights in a row, beginning tonight.
Since announcing my exploratory committee to run for president just two days ago, the outpouring of support has been amazing -- tens of thousands of you have been wishing me well, signing up, and making contributions.
I believe we need new leadership to bring bold and practical changes to this country and to renew the promise of America. I believe in the idea that if you work hard and play by the rules, you and your family deserve a better life.
It all begins with a conversation about the right solutions to meet our challenges. It's a conversation I'm looking forward to having with all of you as I travel across the country. But tonight, it begins live, online.
To learn more and sign up, http://www.hillaryclinton.com
I also hope you'll take a moment to explore my new website at www.hillaryclinton.com, where you'll find other ways you can join the conversation. You can send me a message, or even write the very first guest post for our upcoming blog.
I'm in, and I'm in to win. And with your participation, I believe we can win this together and create a better future for all of us.
