Hillary Defends Possible Straw Donor Cash With Disingenuous Straw Man Argument
Judging by Hillary's refusal to return the hundreds of thousands in Hsu-tainted funds that she raked in through her Senate campaign and HillPAC, and now her insistence that she'll keep (and keep on keeping) the questionably princely sums that are pouring out of low income, possibly non-existent Chinatown residents, one has to presume that she's decided the scandal has finally hit that magical Clintonian critical complexity, beyond which neither the public's attention span nor the media's already mild appetite for Democrat-damaging stories will hold her to any kind of reasonable standard of conduct.
She took advantage of the controversy's complexity this weekend in a defiant speech that addressed not the impropriety of keeping questionable funds, without so much of a second look even after serious questions were raised about the legality of those contributions, but the non-issue of the propriety of accepting donations from first-generation Americans.
A defiant Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton says she has no intention of curtailing her fundraising in the Chinese community despite reports that she accepted cash from dozens of questionable donors in Chinatown earlier this year.
...
“I represent New York and New York is a symbol of the success of immigrants coming to America,” the senator told reporters Saturday after addressing supporters at the Oak Park Elementary School in Des Moines.“I am pleased to have a lot of first-generation American support as well as people who have been longtime involved in the political process … I’m going to keep reaching out to everybody in our country. I want to be a president to everybody.”
Earlier this year, Clinton returned about $7,000 of about $380,000 raised during a fundraiser that targeted donors from China’s east coast after campaign officials raised red flags about the donors. It’s not clear whether other refunds will be issued.
It's a good try. And possibly shrewd, in a wholly deceitful way. Hillary's disingneuous straw man argument may work if people are losing enough of the plot to swallow the idea that what she's being assailed for is accepting donations from hard-working immigrants. That, she can spin into an "I'll champion the underdogs, no matter how much they the establishment tries to stop me!" cry. But of course that's not what's at issue.
As with the Norman Hsu scandal (which I suspect can be tied to the Chinatown situation at some level), the problem here is one of significant irregularities among Clinton's donors, specifically an apparent financial inability of many of the tightly clustered contributors to afford such largesse. In the Hsu case, the tainted funds came from two sources - alleged straw donors who were reimbursed by Hsu and investors in the New York and Orange County investment funds who were pressured by Hsu to contribute to Clinton in order to participate in what they thought were legitimate business deals.
The specifics of the peculiar Chinatown donations have yet to come into focus, but based on the L.A. Times' investigation and follow-up by the New York Post, the contributors in question either cannot be found (sometimes because their addresses don't exist), hold minimum wage jobs that typically wouldn't support 4-figure political contributions, are not registered to vote, and/or specifically admitted they had been reimbursed for their donations.
The Chinatown cluster involves some 150 donors, suggesting it represents a sophisticated, large-scale, coordinated effort to circumvent federal election laws. As in the Hsu case, the implications here are severe enough to warrant a more mature response from the Clinton campaign than a dishonest dismissal of the problem as one of ethnic intolerance.
"We do not ethnically profile donors," growled [campaign spokesman] Howard Wolfson. "Asian-Americans in Chinatown and Flushing have the same right to contribute as every other American."
Agreed. Just as they're subject to the same prohibitions from violating election laws as every other American.
If, as appears to be the case, Hillary has made the decision to bank on the scandal's complexity to save her not only from having to answer for these ubiquitous irregularities, but even from having to return the tainted funds, she may be in for a surprise. The public's Clinton scandal stamina may not have improved, but as the sordid details and immense scope of Hillary's fundraising problems continue to unfold, more and more mainstream media outlets are taking an interest.
Surely, she could wriggle out of almost any underlying impropriety, but overt denials, dismissals, and failures to address the irregularities as they splash across the front pages (i.e. precisely what we're seeing now in the Chinatown brush-off and the sloppy and incomplete Hsu refunds) may make for a stickier mess.
Hillary says she wants to be "President to everybody." She can start by showing everybody that she's dependable and conscientious enough to deal responsibly with serious issues when they present themselves, not sweep them under the rug or shrug them off as the product of the prejudices of others.

Considering the ratio of her campaign returns to all others on both sides of the aisle and her insistence she wanted zero defects fund raising it really brings into question her readiness for managing something as complex as a federal budget. For a little more insight I looked at the fact that the FEC quarterly submissions have as part of the reporting the name of the software and the version used to submit the data. Only a little searching around to find the web page for information on the capabilities of the software being used showed that for some of the things showing up in her campaign submissions had to clearly be over ridden in the software to bring those donations forward.Posted by: JustADude | Oct 22, 2007 4:20:22 PM
Also every campaign has the software suite that gives all sorts of looks at how donations historically have occurred with all the patterns, zipcode , city , state and MSA area breakdowns and would have flagged the single fundraiser where 90% of those new donations came in from as out of bounds by a few standard deviations from the norm. I would wager that flags were going off in their software saying "you got how much"Posted by: JustADude | Oct 22, 2007 4:23:54 PM
JustADude--I agree that the finance committee for any campaign would have had all sorts of computer flags going off when they saw the returns from the New York Chinatown district. I did a small analysis of the contributions in zipcode 10002 that includes part of the Chinatown of New York. Here are the results for donors that have contributed $1000 or more: In 2003 all politicians collected $42,000. In 2004 all politicians collected $58,110. In 2005 all politicians collected $67,800. In 2006 all politicians collected $55,450. And, now in year-to-date 2007 all politicians have collected $159,950!!!!! Yes, a triple jump in collections would knock the socks off any finance chairman.Posted by: Larry | Oct 22, 2007 7:30:03 PM
We can debate the complexities of her fund raising at our leisure, but one question must be asked. What is the ultimate source of this cash? Is this Red China seeking influence again? The Triad connection of some portion of the donors is suggestive. We know the Saudis have already purchased substantial political influence with the Clintons (and the Bush's). Is another foreign adversary imitating their success? The Chinese got ICBM's the last time they funded a Clinton's election. What is their goal this time?Posted by: David/California | Oct 22, 2007 9:19:21 PM

Would anyone really be be surprised by a thread of history whereby Hillary is elected in 2008 but forced to resign by 2012 owing to some kind of scandal known or unknown? i personally, would not be surprised. sad and fearful for the country, but not surprised. pay attention to the Dem VP nominee in 08.Posted by: mike d. | Oct 22, 2007 9:58:43 PM
We'll see what happens, but I'm almost (almost!) game for a Hillary presidency. Why? Well, for a start, we'd likely be treated to the entertaining spectacle of seeing the first husband and wife to both be impeached after their respective elections to the Oval Orifice. Delicioussssssssss........Posted by: MarkJ | Oct 22, 2007 10:20:59 PM
Mike D: Would anyone really be be surprised by a thread of history whereby Hillary is elected in 2008 but forced to resign Yeah, I would. Hillary would never resign. It doesn't matter what kind of sordid secret is exposed -- she's already shown herself immune to shame (and most other emotions that don't involve anger and holding grudges). She wouldn't accept being turned out by impeachment, either. Look at the ill grace with which she departed the White House last time. All politicians have a lust for power, but hers is remarkable in its intensity.Posted by: Kevin R.C. 'Hognose' O'Brien | Oct 22, 2007 11:05:13 PM
All I have seen is people of Chinese origin. I have not picked up anything suggesting money sources. Even if you go with that assumption there are much easier ways to buy influence rather than through campaign donations that are now capped. Individual donors max a 4600.00. Better through donations to foundations, bogus hedge fund investments, sham real estate transactions and any other number of way including foreign accounts or whatever. To much involved and way to complex for little guy small bite donations. Just isn't efficient on any scale.Posted by: JustADude | Oct 22, 2007 11:22:23 PM
I make a nice living as an attorney, yet I can't afford right now to give any money to my man Fred Thompson. But a bunch of busboys and dishwashers can write fat checks? Please. Hillary, like her husband, is ready to sell America to China as long as she keeps the payments.Posted by: djslybri | Oct 23, 2007 12:13:55 AM
To be fair to Hillary, line-by-line management of the campaign budget isn't normally done by candidates, but by their staff. The staff Hillary recruits and the campaign donors/operatives she recruits reflect on her ability (or inability) to be an ethical politician. Remember, she was the co-President of the administration that promised "to be the most ethical White House ever." That was one of many, many promises the co-dependent Presidency of the clinton era of greed and avarice in Washington.Posted by: michael i | Oct 23, 2007 1:09:24 AM
Of course the news media will ignore this story because the news media is afraid of Hillary (not Rodham) Clinton.Posted by: The Outlander | Oct 23, 2007 8:57:39 AM
Campaign Finance law chased big money contributions underground. Bundling certainly involves actual, smaller political contributors but mostly its the practice of Big Money donors masking their now illegal contributions via "straw donors" as strongly suggested in this case. Its no doubt a mix, some community members coerced, some "bribed," some inspired or motivated to actually give something, but the real purpose is to mask the big money. Anything else is incidental. And before GOP supporters get too excited about how bad this can get for Hillary, realize that the GOP has adopted this form of political money laundering in just as big a way. Thanks, Senator McCain! I'm sure we all think politics are so much cleaner now.Posted by: dadmanly | Oct 23, 2007 9:25:46 AM
re: Eric S. and Ryan Waxx, "to be fair to Hillary....." Sorry, I don't buy that argument. Hillary was content to support Sarbanes-Oxley which requires corporate CEOs to be criminally liable for mistakes and omissions made by their staffs in reporting corporate income and expenses. It seems to me that it is completely fair to hold Hillary to the same standard to which she wishes to hold corporate executives. I doubt campaign finance law is any more complex than the FASB standards for corporate financial reporting. If a CEO is required to certify, with criminal liability, that his company's reports are accurate, I see no reason why a candidate shouldn't be held responsible for her campaign's financial behavior.Posted by: Tom the Barbarian | Oct 23, 2007 12:26:59 PM
To David/California: The Chinese influence never left the Clintons to come back. And China got a hell of a lot more than ICBMs. They were handed our Military Satellite/Manned Space program technology which advanced them twenty years - which they will no doubt use to waste OUR satellite systems when advantageous, and maybe even stake claim to who knows how much of the Moon in the future. All while we spend gobs of money playing house with the ‘International’ Space Station, when the Shuttle should have long ago been retired and the newer, safer, cheaper, more reliable Apollo-based Constellation program would have us doing whatever and whenever we damn well please. They also got the ‘Rights’ to dig up as much ‘clean-burning coal’ that they can find in the state of Utah. They got our Patent Laws neutered to water-down innovation - which is one of our greatest strengths. Copying and cheap manufacturing are among THEIR greatest strengths. How much of what’s in our homes and stores is made in China? I’d also love to see what immigration and maritime laws have been gutted or ignored to facilitate the countless Chinese Coyote Ships bringing illegal nationals here in the first place - that work for and donate tax-free American dollars to a political campaign. And, the goal of the Chi-Comms is exactly as it was with Cold-War U.S.S.R. - only even larger in scope and much smarter and quieter.Posted by: Curtis from Greenwood Lake | Oct 23, 2007 5:03:56 PM
___JustADude: Call me a nut, but I’m guessing they are already involved to the top of their pant-suits in everything you mentioned - and then some. The newest China-Money-Gate stuff is simply acting like a lightning rod absorbing Press capital and shadowing an underground money digesting cesspool that would make us wretch, were it exposed to open air.Posted by: Curtis from Greenwood Lake | Oct 23, 2007 5:16:01 PM
___dad manly: “…the GOP has adopted this form of political money laundering in just as big a way”. Please spare me. That’s straight from the; ‘Democrats Are Always Innocent Because Republicans Might Be Doing It Too’ list. Or, more laughably; “The Republicans Made Me Do It”. Are you actually saying the Clinton Corporation’s money behavior was McCain’s fault, or are you saying if it weren’t for McCain/Feingold, the Clintons wouldn’t be forced into doing the things they did? [By the way, half of the name on that bill has a big, fat ‘D’ behind it, riiiight?] The Republicans are Boy Scouts compared to the Clinton/Democrat Organizational Machine that gets much of its loot (that it doesn’t get from Beijing and billionaire ‘501s‘) from Big Corporation extortion through GenderBias/RaceBaiting/UltraEnvirnmentalist/Union/TrialLawyer/AntiBusiness Wealth-Transfer Pimps like the good Socialists they are. The Right gets a bulk of its money from individual checks from John and Jane Q. Public, Joe Six-Pack, Security Moms, NASCAR Dads and Small Business. The real capitalists. Years ago, Big Business went for R and many small checks went to D. Reagan got more people to write personal checks for Republicans and the individual checks pretty much stopped coming in for Democrats soon after Mr. Clinton got into office - which helped the Republicans in ‘94 and started the insatiable Clintonian appetite to get money by ‘other’ means. And for how many years was the name ‘Abramoff’ jammed down our throats, even though Democrats were involved almost “just as big”? Yet the Goebbels Press find it impossible to include the words ‘China’, ’money’, and ‘Clinton’ in the same sentence. In my book, McCain is no Republican team member and he especially didn’t wave the McCain/Feingold flag in everyone’s face for any benefit to Republicans. He was too busy wasting political capital on dinner and movie tickets to get the Press hot enough to join him for endless one-newscycle-stands that never even got him to first base anyway. Hope he gets just what he deserves.Posted by: Curtis from Greenwood Lake | Oct 23, 2007 6:47:45 PM
Wolfson originally tried out the ethnic meme with Hsu too, but dropped it pretty quickly as the true extent of Hsu's felonious history became too obvious to deny. This is not just a spur of the moment strawman; it's part of a larger strategy.Posted by: JM Hanes | Oct 24, 2007 1:51:50 AM
Here is what Wolfson had to say on August 29 in the breaking story by the LA Times: ""Norman Hsu is a longtime and generous supporter of the Democratic Party and its candidates, including Sen. Clinton," Howard Wolfson, a spokesman for the campaign, said Tuesday. "During Mr. Hsu's many years of active participation in the political process, there has been no question about his integrity or his commitment to playing by the rules, and we have absolutely no reason to call his contributions into question or to return them."" Here is what Wolfson said when they returned the money to 260 donors: "In light of recent events and allegations that Mr. Norman Hsu engaged in an illegal investment scheme, we have decided out of an abundance of caution to return the money he raised for our campaign," Clinton spokesman Howard Wolfson said in a statement Monday night. "An estimated 260 donors this week will receive refunds totaling approximately $850,000 from the campaign." Wolfson said the Clinton campaign also will vigorously review its fundraisers, including thorough criminal background checks, in the future. "In any instances where a source of a bundler's income is in question, the campaign will take affirmative steps to verify its origin," he said." It appears the only affirmative action the Clinton campaign is taking is to deny they have any problems with any donors. "Posted by: Larry | Oct 24, 2007 8:09:41 AM
