Lamentabluh Jimmuh
This letter from President Jimmy Carter to his sister-in-law Sybil was recently spotted in a private collection in Alabama.
I don't know what to say, other than that I assume Stockholm will be calling shortly to arrange for the return of his Nobel Peace Prize.

To Sybil,
Lamentably, I killed your cat while trying just to sting it. It was crouched, as usual, under one of our bird feeders & I fired from some distance with bird shot. It may ease your grief somewhat to know that the cat was buried properly with a prayer & that I’ll be glad to get you another of your choice.
I called & came by your house several times. We will be in the Dominican Republic until Thursday. I’ll see you then.

In the President's defense, as a Carter Family cat, the creature was very likely already suffering from considerable malaise.

Any of you who whine about the death of a poor cat can go sit with the liberals. I'll talk to them later. Peace - Carter shot a cat, and tried to avoid a WAR. Hmmm degrees maybe. Thank God some of us understand that both the liberals and the conservatives are all a bunch of babys. I encourage you to drop out of this argument. Liberal/Conservative means nothing anymore. "How typical: He’s blaming his victim." That's rather stupid; he was simply stating a fact. Would you say the same thing of a police report in which the cop explains the actions of someone that led him to shoot and unintentionally kill the person? Are you one of those touchy feely types who thinks that we should wait until crimes are committed, or birds are eaten, before taking action? Except for the part about showing regret, admitting an error, having concern for another's feelings, offering restitution, and going out of his way to make contact with those whose loss he caused, the letter could just as well have been written by George W.
